Today, most kid's books are wimpy, authors are afraid to give characters depth or put them in dire situations in case of complaining parents , but Smith wrote a book that had grief and fear but ultimately had a happy ending, and Abby Linford and her Imaginary Friend 's strong message of friends sticking together in the hardest of times remained a theme throughout the entire story. Abby wasn't your typical superficial character in a kid's book; she was original, funny and likeable.
Overly mature for her age but not in a way that felt fake, she's a character that many kids can relate to. Her "imaginary" friend, Isaac, was just as unique, if not even more. There were a few spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book, but it's still enjoyable nonetheless, I just don't think I'd recommend it to a younger child learning to read.
And I'm seventeen but I still enjoyed it; no matter your age it's a book that stays with you. An excellent self-pubbed book that really deserves much more of an audience! I soon could not put it down.
Abby is a bit of an outcast. Her dad died when she was three, and her mother is in a state of depression, so much of the housework falls on her. I was sure that she was older until it stated otherwise. Did I mention she likes bugs? Then she meets Isaac, who becomes her friend. When she brings him to school to introduce him, she gets in trouble for introducing her imaginary friend. Then, during a storm, Isaac tells Abby to run to a nearby church to escape some creatures that are pacing outside her house. Once in the church, he breaks through the floorboards, and takes her into a strange new world — the world of imaginary friends.
The plot of this book was amazing. Every time I thought I had all the pieces and that I knew how it would end, something new would be revealed and the story would take a whole new turn. There were a few things that I saw coming, but for the most part, it was able to keep me on the edge of my seat. However, points like that were few and far between. However, the end soon came, and surprisingly, it did not seem rushed.
For a book with such a roller coaster plot, the ending did not leave you gasping. It is my guess that the author is catholic because anywhere that is blessed by or associated with the church is a safe zone from the Lemmicks, and a mention of purgatory. I really fell in love with this book, so did my 8 year old daughter. It is a book that can appeal to all ages due to the main character being so personable, you can't help but like her. The world that Abby is drawn into is so vividly painted that you want to visit it and the characters and creatures she meets keep the story moving along so well.
The only critisism is that the cover doesn't feel right for the wonderful story inside. It is a story that you are sad to finish and I really can't wait for a sequel. My daughter and I read this together, and we loved it! Not for the faint of heart. It was adventurous and a couple people die. So there's that. A really great story, and I was very happy with the ending. Mar 09, Angelica Havener rated it it was amazing Shelves: magical.
I think I'll read it again. I was first attracted to the cover and the unusual title. This book was on my to-read list for a while and thanks to the kindle lending library program I was able to borrow this book and finally read.

I didn't know what was going to come next and the story delved much deeper than I expected. I really think that this is one of the books that could be made into a movie or at least put on tv. I would definitely read more from this author.
